The 14th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes struck first and fast as Lucy Clayton collected the first of three goals on a rebounded shot just 6:19 into the contest to give OSU a lead it would not relinquish on the way to a 6-1 victory over Ball State Tuesday in Muncie. The Cardinals' lone goal came on Carla Chiampi's first goal of the season with no time left on the clock at the end of the first period.
Clayton put her team up 2-0 on another unassisted goal with her long shot from the top of the circle less than two minutes later. Leticia Fragapane gave the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead on a pass from Clayton with 16:44 left in the period. Ball State's goal came on a direct corner play with a Chiampi-Maggie Durbin-Chiampi pass combination resulting in a goal for Chiampi on an assist from Durbin with no time left on the clock at the end of the first period.
Clayton completed her hat trick with a direct corner conversion goal 2:53 into the second stanza. Yesenia Luces and Saskia Mueller provided the assists. Lauren Kruse's unassisted rebound shot directly in front of the goal exactly seven minutes later gave OSU a 5-1 lead. Luces put the finishing touches on the Buckeyes' victory with her unassisted goal with just under 20 minutes left in the period.
Ohio State posted a 22-14 advantage in shots for the game, but Ball State closed the Buckeye's offensive advantage with seven shots to OSU's nine in the second period. Both teams accumulated nine penalty corners. Jessica Malone, who came in to relieve starting goalie Tracy Bannister with 16:44 left in the first period, had seven saves. Bannister, who took the loss, totaled five. Lindsay Williams had three saves for Ohio State.
Ball State drops to 1-6 with the loss, while Ohio State improves to 6-2. BSU opens its 24th season of Mid-American Conference play Friday when it hosts Ohio at 3 p.m.
