Ball State vs. Providence Game Story (PDF)
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Senior Chantelle Isaac-Smith (Clayton, Calif./Concord) seemingly put the Ball State field hockey team on her back Saturday afternoon at the University of Iowa's Grant Field, scoring two unassisted goals in a 12-second span to help the Cardinals (1-3) defeat Providence 2-1 for their first win of the season.
Providence had the only score of the first half, with a goal by Abby Maguire on a pass from Melissa McGow at 16:56.
Ball State came roaring back less than 10 minutes into the second half as Isaac-Smith attempted a shot, which was saved by Friars goalkeeper Stephanie Scavelli, then gathered the rebound and put it into the back of the net at 44:04.
Just 12 seconds later, forward Isaac-Smith dribbled into the zone past two defenders and shot it past Scavelli for her third goal of the season and 17th career score.
Senior goalkeeper Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) made five saves in the contest, while only allowing one goal for her 12th career victory.
For the first time this young season, the Cardinals outshot their opponents as they held a 15-11 advantage for the game. Ball State also owned a 7-3 edge in penalty corners.
The Cardinals travel to Evanston, Ill., for matchups with Northwestern and Louisville Sept. 16 and 17, respectively. BSU is 7-11-2 all time versus Northwestern, including last year's 3-2 loss to the then 19th-ranked Wildcats in Muncie.
Now a member of the Big East Conference, Louisville, the 2004 Mid-American Conference tournament winner and regular season co-champion, and Ball State have met 22 times with BSU owning a 15-7 edge.
