Quay's Hat Trick Propels Field Hockey to 6-0 Win Over Central Michigan
October 22, 2005 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Junior Lindsay Quay (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) notched her first collegiate hat trick Saturday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field as she helped lead the Ball State (3-11, 2-5 MAC) field hockey team to a 6-0 shutout victory of Central Michigan (7-10, 4-4 MAC).
Despite an even statistical comparison, the Cardinals dominated the Chippewas on both ends of the field. BSU finished with a 17-16 edge in shots, while the teams totaled seven penalty corners each.
A breakaway by senior Chantelle Isaac (Clayton, Calif./Concord) led to Ball State's third penalty corner of the game. Quay converted at 16:48 with a line-drive shot taken after the push by junior Carla Chiampi (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman) and the stop by senior Maggie Durbin (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) set up the play.
Following a quiet conclusion to the first half by both teams, Quay started what would eventually be a five-goal second half for the Cardinals with a one-timer off a pass from sophomore Lauren Cruz (Centreville, Va./Centreville) at the 36:51 mark to BSU up 2-0.
Sophomore Katie Kloeckener (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) notched her first career goal six minutes later as she dove with outstretched arms to wrap a shot around CMU goalkeeper Danielle Frank, with the assist going to Quay.
Isaac added an unassisted score at 49:51 to increase the lead to 4-0. Ten minutes later, Quay added her third goal of the game on a pass from junior Tara Reed (Temple, Pa./Oley Valley). Isaac took a rebound and slammed it into the back of the cage at 66:02 to wrap up the day's scoring with Ball State ahead 6-0.
With seven saves, senior goalkeeper Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) notched her second shutout of the year and sixth solo shutout of her career.
Also helping the defensive effort with saves of their own were Durbin and Chiampi, after Chippewa players made their way past Bannister hoping for an empty net but saw more Cardinals instead.
Quay now ranks second on the team in goals (8) and points (18), while Isaac leads both categories with 10 goals and 21 points for the Cardinals. Bannister dropped her goals-against average to 3.28, while improving her 2005 record to 3-9.
BSU now owns a 37-13 all-time edge over CMU in a series dating back to 1979, including a 19-5 home advantage. The Chippewas defeated the Cardinals 3-2 when the teams met Oct. 1 in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
Ball State travels to Oxford, Ohio, for a 1 p.m. contest against Miami (7-9, 4-4 MAC) Sunday at the Miami Turf Field. When the teams met in Muncie Oct. 7, the Cardinals shutout the RedHawks 1-0 in a game that stretched into overtime.
