Butler starred in basketball for the Cardinals between 1961 and 1964, earning All-America honorable mention honors and being named Indiana Collegiate Conference Player of the Year after leading BSU into the NCAA College Division Tournament following the 1963-64 season. The three-time Ball State Most Valuable Player and ICC first-team selection still owns all of the university’s rebounding records, including 1,231 during his career, 442 in one season, and 27 in one game. The 6-6 center’s 1,278 career points ranks in the top ten on the BSU all-time scoring list.
