David Bell joined Ball State gymnastics in 2019 as the volunteer strength and conditioning coach. Bell is also deputy chief of the Ball State University Police.
Bell joined Ball State in 1988 as a police officer for the university police department (UPD). Since then, he has gone through the ranks of patrol officer, corporal, sergeant and lieutenant. He has been a law enforcement instructor since 1995 in the topics of firearms, use of force/defensive tactics and emergency vehicle operations. For 18 years, Bell was UPD’s training and special event coordinator, responsible for all the officers' training, planning and police staffing of events across campus. Bell began a career in law enforcement in 1993 with the Delaware County sheriff’s office.
In 2013 Bell began his undergradate education at Ball State in exercise science, graduating in 2018. Shortly before graduation, Bell attained certification as a strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). That is when he began assisting with athletic teams’ strength and conditioning. He worked with all the teams at Ball State during his internship in the weight room and spent most of his time with the gymnastics team.
In 2021 Bell attained a master’s of arts degree in sports performance. In 1991 he attained an associate degree from Vincennes University in commercial art and graphic design. He is a 1989 graduate of Delta High School where he excelled in baseball. Bell was born and raised in Muncie, Indiana.
Bell enjoys staying fit, challenging himself and others, going on walks and hikes, fishing, and camping. He is married, has two children, a granddaughter, and a grandson.
