Returning to Ball State as an assistant coach, Alex Maloney wrapped up his third season assisting with day-to-day operations and serving as the recruiting coordinator along with working with hitters and catchers in 2025. Maloney coached First Team All-MAC hitters in outfielder Blake Bevis, shortstop Dylan Grego and second baseman Nick Husovsky along with Second Team third baseman Alex Richter, a quartet that carried the Cardinals to the third-most home runs in a season (89) in program history. Grego's 91 hits on the year were the third-most in a season for a Ball State player, while Bevis upped his career home run total to 41 with 18 in 2025 to move in to fourth place for the most in a career in program history. The Cardinals led the MAC with 595 total hits on the year. Defensively, Ball State finished the regular season with the top fielding percentage (.984) in NCAA Division I.
In 2024, Maloney coached a Cardinals group that finished third in the Mid-American Conference regular season standing and runners-up in the MAC Tournament. Shortstop Michael Hallquist hit the second-most home runs in program history (21) with the help of Maloney. Left-handed pitcher Merritt Beeker was recruited by Maloney in the transfer portal from East Carolina before a 2024 MAC Pitcher of the Year performance and 11th round selection in the MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals.
He helped the Cardinals to a Mid-American Conference championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2023 while sporting a .282 batting average and a top-three finish in the MAC in average, runs and home runs.
Maloney spent the 2022 season as an assistant coach at SIUE. While with the Cougars, he worked with hitters and infielders as well as recruiting players. During his time at SIUE, the hitters combined to hit 99 home runs, which was tied for 21st in the NCAA and led the Ohio Valley Conference. The Cougars produced a slugging percentage of .524, which was 12th in the country and led the OVC. The 99 home runs set a new program record. The Cougars picked up the program’s first two wins in a conference tournament at the NCAA Division I level. He guided Brett Johnson to a program record 23 home runs and a First Team All-OVC selection, which culminated in him being selected in the 10th round of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Prior to SIUE, Alex Maloney was a volunteer assistant at Tennessee Tech. While with the Golden Eagles, he worked with hitters, catchers, infielders, and was primarily in charge of defensive alignment.
Maloney spent time as a graduate assistant at Wayne State where he served as the pitching coach. He helped them to an 11-4 start prior to COVID-19 shutting down the season. The Wayne State pitching staff recorded the lowest ERA in the conference during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He coached Hunter Brown, who played in the 2022 MLB All-Star Futures Game and led American League rookie pitchers in innings pitched (155.2), strikeouts (178), wins (11) and starts (29) for the Houston Astros in 2023. Brown was named an American League All-Star in 2025 and the AL Pitcher of the Month in June 2025 after posting a 1.19 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 30.1 innings pitched during the month.
In the summer of 2019, Maloney served as an assistant coach in the United Shores professional Baseball League, where he worked with infielders and hitters. He also assisted in evaluating and recruiting athletes.
During his time at Ball State as a student-athlete, Maloney was a member of the 2014 MAC regular-season championship team as well as the MAC West Division winners in 2014 and 2016. The recipient of Ball State's "Dirtbag Award" in 2017, he is currently tied for second in BSU history with 120 career walks and is third with 865 at-bats. Maloney's 235 career hits are the ninth-most in program history. After Ball State, he played in the Chicago White Sox minor league system in 2017 and 2018.
He completed a Master of Business Administration degree from the Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State University in 2020.
Maloney is married to the former Bailey Baumer who played volleyball at Ball State from 2014 to 2017.
