Gary Yohe, who spent the last seven seasons leading Marian University women's soccer to unprecedented heights, enters his first season as an assistant coach for Ball State in 2021.
Â
"I'm excited to have Gary joining our team," head coach Josh Rife said. "I think he is the perfect addition to our staff. He brings a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of the game, along with a history of success at every stop throughout his career."
Â
In his seven-year stint guiding the Knights, which included a runner-up finish in the 2019 NAIA National Tournament, Yohe produced a 101-37-13 overall record. His .712 winning percentage is the best in program history, and he guided MU to its first two 20-win seasons.
Â
"I want to thank Coach Rife for giving me the opportunity to join his staff alongside he and Katy," Yohe said. "The Ball State soccer program has been quite successful over the past few years, and I look forward to being a part of their quest to continue that trend."
Â
The first 20-win season came during the magical 2019 run when he led his alma mater to a 20-3-3 overall record and the Crossroads League tournament championship. The Knights would win three games at the NAIA final site, including a dramatic penalty kick victory over top-seeded William Carey, and finish the year as national runner-up.
Â
While the schedule looked different due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, Yohe's Knights picked up right where they left off in 2020-21, setting a program record with 21 wins. Marian University captured the Crossroads League regular season and tournament championships in the same season for the first time while winning a pair of games in the NAIA National Tournament.
Â
Yohe coach the program's first NAIA First Team All-American during the 2019 season in Erin Oleksak. Oleksak earned her second straight NAIA First Team All-American honor in 2020-21 and was joined by Sydney Genatempo on the first team and Siera Stuart on the second team.
Â
Marian University earned its first-ever NAIA Tournament berth under Yohe in 2017, finishing the season with a 16-3-4 overall record and as runner-up in both the regular season and conference tournament. The team went 14-0-1 at home that season and produced a 48-1-4 home record over the past four years.
Â
Taking over a program that failed to make the conference tournament in the two seasons before his arrival, Yohe took the Knights back to the event in his first season in 2014. The next two years, MU finished in the top three of the Crossroads League regular season standings and advanced to the championship game of the tournament.
Â
Before arriving at Marian University, Yohe spent five seasons as head coach at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School where he amassed a 58-25-21 record. The Braves won four sectional championships, one regional title, and made three regional final appearances under his leadership. He was named the Marion Country Coach of the Year twice and was a three-time district coach of the year.
Â
Yohe also holds a USSF National "B" License, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, and an NSCAA National Goalkeeper Diploma.
Â
He has 15-plus years of coaching experience at the club level and currently is on staff with the Indiana Fire Juniors ECNL program. In addition, he has spent 10-plus years training goalkeepers with his Indiana Goalkeeper Academy and served as goalkeeper coach with the Indy Eleven for three seasons after the club was announced on April 25, 2013.
Yohe began his coaching career at IUPUI, helping lead the Jaguars to a 13-7 record and a berth in the league tournament in 2008 as an assistant coach and the team's goalkeeper coach.
Â
As a collegiate student-athlete, Yohe was a three-year starting goalkeeper for Marian University from 2004-06 and earned NSCAA All-America honorable mention honors. He finished his career as the program's single-season and career record holder for goals-against-average at 0.99 and 1.21, respectively.
Â
He also led the Knights to their only Mid-Central College Conference Tournament championship in 2005 when he saved four-of-five penalty shots in the semifinals of the tournament against Goshen. He earned a bachelor's degree in sport management in 2007.
Â
Yohe currently resides in Carmel, Indiana, with his wife Kathleen, their two daughters, Lainey and Paige, and their one son, Nolan.
