MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State men's golf coach Mike Fleck has announced the signing of Evansville North teammates Luke Johnston and Brody Sorrell. Both Johnston and Sorrell were top 20 finishers the past two seasons in the IHSAA state finals while leading the Huskies to a state record eight consecutive regional championships.
Close friends and teammates, the Huskies duo led Evansville North to the state finals finishes in each of their three high school seasons.
"These guys are two of best players in the state and the bonus for us as they continue their careers as teammates," said veteran Ball State coach Mike Fleck, "is that they are close and will push each other and their teammates to carry on the championship expectations we have here. Evansville North is a highly respected program, and we are fortunate both Brody and Luke chose to be a part of our Ball State family."
One stroke behind current Ball State freshman Happy Gilmore, Johnston finished 13th in the 2024 IHSAA state tournament while he and Sorrell, four strokes behind, paced Evansville North to a sixth-place finish. As sophomores in 2023, the duo helped the Huskies to a fifth-place finish with both tied in 18th place as individuals.
Johnston is a two-time player of the year in the Southwest Indiana Athletic Conference, with he and Sorrell both earning all-conference accolades in three straight seasons. Both competed the past two years at Golfweek junior tour events in Muncie. Sorrell shot a pair of 68s to tie for first place at the 2023 Player's Club event with current Ball State freshman Gavin Hare while Johnston won this fall's event at Delaware Country Club with a pair of 69s.
Johnston was the first-place medalist at the IHSAA sectional each of the past two seasons, firing 69 in 2024 and 67 in 2023. "Luke is a model of consistency and has that competitive demeanor to always be in the mix to compete at or near the top of the leaderboard in every event he plays," said Fleck. "His swing is so good and his ability to execute shots around a golf course is very impressive to watch. He reminds me a lot of Tyler Merkel, another Evansville player who had an outstanding career here at Ball State. Luke knows how to get the job done on the course and will be an awesome addition to our program."
Sorrell, meanwhile, was a USGA Junior Amateur qualifier last June, finishing in second place with a single-round score of 69 at the Pfau Course at IU. "The first thing that jumps out with Brody is his athleticism," Fleck added. "Brody is a very strong, and a power-producing player with a swing that matches up perfectly with his athletic frame. He is an ultra-competitive young man who wants to win. This edge has produced many successful experiences with the highlight being him playing in the 2024 US Junior Amateur. Along with Luke, these two athletes bring excellent chemistry to the squad and that 'everyday desire' to compete for championships."
