João Mescolote enters his first season as a graduate assistant coach for the Ball State swimming & diving program in 2022-23 after spending the previous season in the same role at Concordia University Irvine.
A native of Presidente Prudente, Brazil, and a former member of the Brazilian Swimming Junior National Team, Mescolote worked with the Golden Eagles’ sprinters and helped the men’s program win the 2021-22 PacWest Conference championship.
“João adds a fresh perspective to our Cardinals program with his experience growing up swimming in Brazil, representing the LSU Tigers, and gaining coaching experience at Concordia University,” Agnew said. “His passion and knowledge in the weight room and dryland is already adding fuel to our Cardinals.”
Prior to beginning his collegiate coaching career, Mescolote worked as a marketing manager for both Swimming World Magazine and Hydra-Guard Sport Drink, while continuing to swim at an elite level. From 2010-21, Mescolote was a three-time Brazilian Olympic Trials qualifier (2012, 2016, 2021), as well as a multi-time national medalist and record holder in a variety of different age groups and events.
“I’m excited to work with Coach J. Agnew and a staff that is as passionate as I am about fast swimming and working hard,” Mescolote said. “We will work tirelessly to represent Ball State University in a positive manner in every facet, while striving to provide the best student-athlete experience possible. I am looking forward to sharing some of my experiences gained inside and outside of the pool with this exceptional group of student-athletes, coaches, and support staff.”
In addition to his international experience, Mescolote was a four-year letterwinner at LSU from 2014-18. He finished his career as the program record holder in the 200 medley relay (1:25.92) and owned the 10th-best individual 50 freestyle (19.82) time in the Tiger’s record book. He finished his career with a 14th-place swim in the 50 freestyle at the Southeastern Conference Championships.
