Zach Putnam joined the Ball State staff in May of 2023 as a volunteer assistant and will work primarily with the pitchers.
Putnam was the Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Baseball in 2005, and also led the team to a state title in 2004. He played his college ball at Michigan, where Coach Maloney was the head coach. He was a two-time All-American. He was a pitcher and a designated hitter. He became our Friday starter as a freshman as well as our DH batting 4th. One of the greatest players I have had the privilege of coaching. "I am thrilled to have him join our staff," said Head Coach Rich Maloney.
Â
He was drafted by Cleveland in the 2008 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on September 13, 2011, with the Indians. He also spent time with the Colorado Rockies, Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago White Sox. He finished his professional career with a 10-7 record with 162 strikeouts. He posted a career ERA of 3.20.
