Larry Scully, an experienced coach who has mentored 21 MLB Draft picks in his career, came to Ball State in August 2019 as the team's new pitching coach. Before coming to Muncie, Scully spent five seasons at Bradley. Scully is also Driveline certified in pitching.

In just three seasons with the Cardinals, Scully coached Kyle Nicolas, a second-round pick in 2020, Chayce McDermott, a fourth-round pick in 2021, and Tyler Schweitzer, a fourth-round pick in 2022.
During the 2022 season, Scully guided the pitching staff to be one of the best in the MAC, as well as the NCAA. The staff was fifth in the NCAA in hits allowed per nine innings with 7.57, which led the MAC. The Cardinal pitchers finished tied for 11th in the NCAA with 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings, which led the MAC. Scully and the BSU pitching staff were able to produce top-15 marks in the NCAA despite losing 250 innings from the previous season. The Cardinals tied for 30th in the country in WHIP, which led the MAC.
He coached Schweitzer to ABCA/Rawlings All-American and All-Region, Collegiate Baseball All-American, and MAC Pitcher of the Year honors. Schweitzer finished tied for second in the NCAA with 11 wins. He helped Ryan Brown become a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American and MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year. He coached Sam Klein, who finished tied for 17th in the NCAA with 11 saves, which led the MAC.
In 2021, Ball State finished tied for 10th in the NCAA with 10.9 strikeouts per game and were tied for 25th in 2020 with 10.9 strikeouts per game. The Ball State pitching staff has produced a 4.17 ERA and amassed 695 strikeouts under Scully, despite one season being shortened due to COVID in 2020.
In 2019, Scully helped Bradley, competing in the RPI No. 6-ranked Missouri Valley Conference, to lead the leauge in ERA (3.37), fewest hits allowed per game (7.21) and WHIP (1.27). Between 2015-19, Bradley's pitching staff reached many notable achievements under Scully:
Scully graduated from Western Kentucky with a bachelor's degree in English literature in 1992. He earned a master's degree from the United State Sports Academy in 1994. During his playing career, he was an invite to the Canadian Junior Olympic Team as a left-handed pitcher.

- In 2016, Bradley led the Missouri Valley Conference and ranked 34th in the nation with a 3.52 ERA
- In 2015, Scully helped Bradley to an NCAA Tournament appearance as the team set a program record with eight shutouts and posted a 34.1 inning scoreless streak.Â
- Over five seasons, 11 Bradley pitchers earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors.
- Four of his pitchers at Bradley were selected in the first 22 rounds of the MLB Draft, and a fifth signed a free agent contract.
