J.D. Goryl enters his first season as volunteer assistant coach at Ball State for head coach Alex Marconi. Goryl spent the past season as an assistant coach in the Cleveland Indians' organization, on the staff of the Arizona League (AZL) Indians after finishing up his playing career.
Goryl signed as a non-drafted free agent pitcher by the Cleveland Indians in 2009 and pitched two years in the organization for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and the AZL Indians. He starred collegiately at Flagler College as a right-handed pitcher finishing 10th all-time in career starts (25), 11th in fewest runs allowed (109) and 12th in fewest walks (52). He graduated from Flagler with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 2009.
Goryl's father, Johnny Goryl, was a six-year Major League Baseball veteran who also managed one year at the MLB level with the Minnesota Twins and was involved with professional baseball for 60 years.
