Ball State Baseball Alumnus Tyler Schweitzer Makes Major League Debut
April 08, 2026 | Baseball
Ball State baseball alumnus Tyler Schweitzer made his Major League Baseball debut with the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday afternoon pitching against the Baltimore Orioles.
The 2022 Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year and fifth round selection in that year's MLB Draft by the White Sox struck out one in 1.1 innings of one-run ball after entering with two outs in the eighth inning with a runner on. Schweitzer induced a flyout from Coby Mayo after walking the first batter he faced on a full count to get out of the eighth.
The left-handed pitcher struck out Pete Alonso to finish the ninth inning for his first punchout in the big leagues. Schweitzer posted an 8-2 record, 4.61 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 99.2 innings last year between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte.
The 2022 Second Team All-American fashioned a 1.27 ERA last season for a 6-0 record across 12 games with Birmingham. Schweitzer posted four strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA in 5.0 innings over two appearances with Charlotte this spring before being called up for the first time to the majors.
"Tyler Schweitzer never took a backseat to anyone when he pitched for us – he always wanted the ball and believed he could get anyone out," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "We are so happy for him to realize his dream."
Schweitzer joins Alex Call (Dodgers) as Ball State alumni on active rosters for major league teams. Zach Cole, Drey Jameson, Chayce McDermott, Kyle Nicolas and Zach Plesac are each former Cardinals who have played in the big leagues in recent seasons as well.
