KENT, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team fell behind 4-0 after the fourth inning and couldn't generate a comeback in a 5-1 setback at Kent State on Saturday night at Schoonover Stadium.
The Cardinals (19-19, 13-7 Mid-American Conference) scored their lone run of the game on a Brady Davidson double that brought home Ryan Muizelaar in the sixth, but the Golden Flashes (27-10, 14-6 MAC) limited the visitors to three hits on the night to take the middle game of the set.
Kent State struck first in a contest that started at 6 p.m. after originally being scheduled for 3 p.m., on a two-run home run from Brody Williams in the second inning. Luke Matthews hit a two-run double in the fourth frame, and Ripken Reese produced an RBI grounder in the seventh for the hosts.
Easton Tumis (6-2) started for the Golden Flashes and earned the win with 5.0 innings of one-run ball, and Evan Holewinski got the final 12 outs, striking out seven, to claim his fourth save of the year.
Jacob Gillis and Max Kalk joined Davidson as Cardinals with hits on Saturday. John Chambers (4-4) struck out three in 6.1 frames of five-run ball but suffered the loss. Nate Bartlett had two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work for Ball State in relief of Chambers.
