Softball Suffers 4-1 Setback to Kansas City in Weekend Finale
February 14, 2026 | Softball
MEMPHIS - - The Ball State softball team brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the seventh inning but could not complete another late-game comeback in a 4-1 setback to Kansas City Saturday morning in the 901 Classic hosted by Memphis.
Â
The Roos (4-4) struck for single runs in the first and second innings to hold an early 2-0 advantage. While the Cardinals (4-4) cut the lead to one run on a fourth-inning sac fly from senior designated player Lindsey DeRoeck, UMKC responded with individual runs in the fifth and sixth to pull ahead 4-1.
Â
Looking for another late rally, Ball State would put two on with one out thanks to back-to-back walks issues to senior center fielder Ashlee Lovett and junior shortstop Maia Pietrzak. Unfortunately, a flyout to center field and a liner to second ended the game.
Â
Three different Cardinals' pitchers saw action in the game, with sophomore starter Breanna Severino being credited with the setback after surrendering five hits and a pair of runs over her 4.0 innings of work.
Â
Redshirt junior catcher Skylinn Pogue was credited with two of Ball State's six hits in the game and leads the offense with a .462 batting average on the season. Senior first baseman Ella Whitney also logged one hit in the game and is second on the team with a .407 average.
Â
SCORING SUMMARY: (Ball State 1 - Kansas City 4)
T1 - UMKC's Megan Johnston opened the scoring with an RBI single down the right field link (1-0)
T2 - Maya Anthony made it a two-run game with a sac fly to right field (2-0)
B4 - DeRoeck drove in Pogue, who opened the frame with a single, courtesy of a sac fly to center field (2-1)
T5 - Kansas City reclaimed its two-run lead on an Elleana Nacarro single up the middle (3-1)
T6 - Nacarro picked up her second RBI of the game on a bases loaded walk (4-1)
