TOLEDO, Ohio - - The Ball State women's volleyball team closed its weekend series at Toledo with a 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 25-20, 25-11) setback at Savage Arena.
While the Cardinals (11-4; 2-2 Mid-American Conference) were able to limit the Rockets (12-2 ; 4-0 MAC) to its fourth-lowest hitting mark of the season, it could not push past the defending MAC tournament champions.
Unfortunately, the Toledo defense turned in just as solid of an effort, limiting Ball State to a season-low .082 (44-32-147) rate of success.
Junior outside Ava Smith led the Cardinals with 12 kills, while senior middles Gwen Crull and Camryn Wisechipped in nine apiece. Wise also added a team-high four total blocks, while Crull hit a team-best .467 (9-2-15)
On the defensive front, junior libero Sophie Ledbetter turned in another solid effort, leading all players with 21 digs. She also collected four assists and registered a perfect reception percentage in 11 attempts.
Senior setter Lindsey Green was the only other Ball State player to tally double-digit digs, despite the Cardinals holding a 70-to-62 edge in the category. She finished the afternoon with 10, to go along with 18 assists for her fifth double-double of the season.
Rounding out Ball State's key contributors were freshman Merritt Sliwa with a career-high five kills and sophomore setter Reese Axness with 13 assists and nine digs.
On the Toledo side of the net, Sierra Pertzborn led all players with 14 kills, while Grace Freiberger added a team-best 18 digs.
Ball State will need to move past the weekend quickly, as it hosts Miami at 6 p.m. Tuesday for Dig Pink Night.
