Field Hockey Falls Short as CMU Scores Late Fourth Quarter Goal
September 26, 2025 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (3-7, 1-1 MAC) fell 2-1 to Central Michigan (5-3, 1-1 MAC) Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex despite it being a back-and-forth contest throughout the entire 60-minutes of play.
The Cardinals and the Chippewas both came out strong defensively to start the contest. The aggressive style of play led to a scoreless first quarter for both squads.
Ball State was able to take the early lead in the second frame as Jade Vandevoorde got her own rebound off a penalty corner which allowed her to score the first goal today.
The Cardinals continued to control the tempo on both sides of the field the remainder of the half which led them to take the 1-0 lead over the Chippewas at intermission.
After the break, Central Michigan found a gap in the field and Mora Rull quickly escaped BSU defenders to find teammate Camryn Mallory for a quick score to knot the game, 1-1 at the 32:35 mark.
The fourth quarter showed promise for Ball State as the Cardinals drew four penalty corners but unfortunately BSU was unable to capitalize on those opportunities. With just over five minutes remaining CMU added another goal to take the 2-1 lead.
Ball State scrambled in the final minutes to possibly send the game into overtime, but CMU's defense was able to fend the Cardinals off and secure today's victory.
Emma van Hal stood out today for Ball State as she led the Cardinals with six shots while also making some defensive plays at midfield. BSU's lone goal from Vandevoorde marked her third of the season.
In goal for the Cardinals was Carleigh Hofelich who finished the contest with seven saves.
The Ball State field hockey team continues Mid-American Conference action when it welcomes Kent State to the Briner Sports Complex Sunday at noon.
