Ninth Inning Rally Comes up Short for Baseball at Indiana
April 08, 2025 | Baseball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team scored the first two and final three runs of the game but fell 7-5 at Indiana on Tuesday night at Bart Kaufman Field.
The Cardinals (23-11) plated three in the ninth inning and brought the tying run to the plate but couldn't complete the comeback against the Hoosiers (19-14) who scored seven unanswered runs including five in the third to build a 7-2 lead.
Ball State got the scoring started with a Nick Husovsky single that scored Gavin Balius and an RBI groundout by Houston King to bring home Alex Richter in the first frame for a 2-0 edge.
Drue Young (0-3) tossed shutout innings in the first and second but surrendered four runs in 2.2 frames overall as the hosts scored five times in the third. Indiana tacked on two in the fifth inning.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the ninth inning on a Ben Giovannetti walk and Brett Griffiths and Gavin Balius getting hit by pitches before Richter hit an RBI grounder and Husovsky a two-run single to get the visitors within two runs, but the Cardinals struck out to end the midweek intra-state matchup.
Husovsky went 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Richter and Ty Davis also had a pair of knocks each. Richter increase his nation-leading hit by pitch figure to 21 after getting plunked to lead off the third.
"We scored two in the first and three in the ninth but nothing in between," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "They got the big inning, which when a team scores three or more runs in an inning they win 70 percent of the time. We played another solid game of defense. We get another opportunity against them at Victory Field in a couple of weeks."
Indiana's Deron Swanson (2-1) was the first man out of the bullpen and got credited for the win with 4.1 innings of shutout ball.
Ball State is set to return home for a three-game series against Northern Illinois starting at 3 p.m. on Friday.
