Softball Falls in Wednesday Action at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - It was a rough way to end the non-conference portion of the regular season for the Ball State softball team as it suffered a 14-1 (5) setback to Indiana Wednesday evening at Andy Mohr Field.

In a battle of two of the nation's top-scoring teams, the 12th-ranked Cardinals (28-12) offense, which averaged 7.72 runs per game entering the day, was never able to find a rhythm in the batter's box against the Hoosiers (30-13).

Unfortunately, the nation's fifth-highest scoring offense in Indiana, which averaged 8.05 runs per game at the start of the contest, did not have similar issues as it started the bottom of the first with a solo home run and pulled away from there.

Ball State was able to push one run across, however, as two hit batters and a walk loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth. Redshirt catcher McKayla Timmons was then hit by another pitch to bring home BSU's only tally. The Cardinals currently lead the nation with 72 hit batters after today's game.

In addition to the three hit batters, Ball State collected three hits starting with a two-out single from senior left fielder Kara Gunter in the top of the first. Redshirt junior second baseman McKenna Mulholland added a single to open the second, while pitcher/designated player Ella Whitney produced a two-out single in the fourth.

Whitney would suffer the pitching loss for the Cardinals, allowing eight hits and six runs over her 1.2 innings of work.

UP NEXT:
The Ball State softball team returns to action Saturday when it hosts Buffalo in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Due to expected storms in the Muncie area Friday, the series finally will be played Sunday at Noon.

Saturday's will served as Senior Day, with the Cardinals honoring the 10 players and managers who are graduating or have spent four years with the program. Sunday's outing will be the team's Strikeout Cancer Day.
