KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The No. 4 seeded Ball State men's tennis team suffered a dramatic ending to its season losing a hard fought 4-1 battle to top-seeded Buffalo Saturday afternoon at the West Hills Athletic Club in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals.
The Cardinals and the Bulls played a tight knit doubles point which Ball State would come out atop of Buffalo after earning wins on court three and two. After UB winning on the top court, the Ball State twosome of Jacks Lancaster and Broc Fletcher put the Cardinals in position for the possible doubles win after taking down the Bulls No. 3 doubles tandem of Emiliano Jorquera and Faiz Nasyam by a 6-4 decision. Shortly after, Drew Hayward alongside Ian Brady would earn the deciding point with their 7-5 victory at No. 2 doubles versus Theodoris Mistakos and Michael Malkin.
Buffalo began making a comeback after posting straight set victories on courts four and three to take a 2-1 edge over Ball State. Two of the four courts remaining were tightly contested three set thrillers.
Nathaniel Webster, who has played at the No. 1 singles position for three years, gave it his all losing his first set in a tiebreaker (7-6) and then fell in the second (6-1) to Mistakos to push UB"s lead to 3-1. Lancaster was in a similar situation on court No. 2 as he split sets (6-2, 2-6) with Cheng Tang but unfortunately fell in the third, 6-2.
