April 13, 2025 | Women's Tennis
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Ball State women's tennis team (10-9, 4-5 MAC) fell in the final minutes by a 4-3 decision at Toledo (13-6, 6-3 MAC) Sunday afternoon at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
Toledo tallied a 6-4 win on the top court and then posted a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 slot to earn the doubles point over Ball State. Prior to play being abandoned, Ella Hazelbaker paired up with Jemima Williams-Phillips at the No. 3 slot. The duo had a 5-3 edge over Toledo's doubles tandem of Annika Munson and Jone Ibanez.
In singles, things weren't looking good for Ball State as Toledo took first sets on four of the six courts. The Cardinals began making their comeback on court No. 6 as Hazelbaker defeated Catherine Rhegness in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The Rockets earned victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots but Elena Malykh along with teammate Alana Bristow registered three-set thrillers at the No. 1 and No. 5 singles positions, respectively which would end up making the score tied 3-3 with one court remaining.
The match would come down to Isabel Tanjuatco at the No. 4 position. She dropped her first frame in a tiebreaker to Ibanez, 7-6 (6). Tanjuatco then fought her way back to a 6-2 win in set two. Down 3-4, Tanjuatco knotted the third 4-4. The competition continued to be a nail biter but unfortunately Ibanez would end up winning the third frame 6-4 to secure the victory for Toledo.
The Ball State women's tennis team will close out its regular season action on Friday, April 18 at 1 pm against Eastern Michigan at the Foster Adams Family Tennis Center and Bill Richards tennis courts. The Cardinals will also pay tribute to their seniors.
