DORADO, Puerto Rico -- Steady through 18 holes, Ali Khan stayed below par for the second day and remained atop the Ball State golf leaderboard at the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Puerto Rico. After shooting a 3-under par 69 in the opening round, Khan carded a 1-under 71 in Round 2 to sit in 12th place among tournament leaders.
Beginning on the ninth hole in a shotgun start, Khan was par or below on 17 straight holes until he bogeyed the 215-yard par-3 eighth hole to finish his day. Over two rounds of golf, Khan (69-71---140)Â has fired seven birdies to offset just three bogeys. Monday, his two birdies lowered his tournament score to 4-under par. A final round takes place Tuesday when Khan and the Cardinals hope to gain ground again in the 16-team field.
Overall, the Cardinals shot par in Round 1, and +1 in Round 2, riding Khan's steady play in the middle of the pack. Ball State (288-289---577) finds itself in 10th place, up one spot from where it began the day, three strokes behind James Madison (574) and four strokes ahead of Army (581).
Ball State's veteran foursome was each within one stroke of par on Monday, and within six strokes of one another over both rounds.

"Another day of missed opportunities," said Cardinals coach Mike Fleck. "The golf course played just over a stroke harder today, and when the winds picked up and the course got firmer, we just didn't take advantage of the chances to move up. We are in the bottom half of the field in most scoring stats and have some doubles. We need to clean things up and convert on the par 5's tomorrow."
Braxton Kuntz (74-72---146), playing in the Cardinals' No. 2 lineup slot ahead of Khan, fired par on Monday to leap 15 spots in individual standings, from 60th to 45th. He had three birdies and three bogeys to stay even, one stroke ahead of Carter Smith (72-73---145) and Kash Bellar (73-73---146).Ball State's veteran foursome was each within one stroke of par on Monday, and within six strokes of one another over both rounds.
