Women’s Basketball Suffers 60-54 Setback at Home to Kent State
February 22, 2025 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (20-7, 12-2 MAC) suffered a 60-54 loss to Kent State (17-10, 9-5 MAC) Saturday afternoon in Worthen Arena.
It was a dog fight in the first two quarters of play. The Cardinals trailed the Golden Flashes after the first stanza by 20-16 and then again at intermission, 35-29.
Ball State struggled the most with rebounding as Kent State outpaced Ball State in that category, 22-13 in the first half. Other than that, the stat sheet was evenly spread out between the two squads. The Cardinals had a hard time getting their well-known offense going in the first 20 minutes of play shooting only 36 percent from the field.
After the break, the Cardinals were unable to connect on their shots and continued to lose the rebound battle. The Golden Flashes used that momentum to build a 12-point cushion (44-32) by the media timeout of the third stanza.
Finally, with 1:03 remaining, Ally Becki stopped the scoring drought with a 3-pointer which was followed by a layup from Lachelle Austin. Those two plays brought some life back into the Cardinals. A late foul with .02 seconds on the clock sent Becki to the line for two free throws to cut Kent State's edge to eight (47-39) which would end the third frame.
Unfortunately, Ball State's fourth quarter comeback was cut short. Kent State quickly went back up by 12 (53-41) at the 5:20 mark. But the Cardinals played as if it was a marathon and not a sprint. BSU fought its way back to make it a two-possession ball game after a steal and layup from Alex Richard to make the score 56-52 under the two-minute mark. The Golden Flashes though closed the game out strong and was able to take home a six-point victory back to Kent, Ohio.
For the game, Becki led the team with 15 points and went 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. Richard finished the game with 10.
The Ball State women's basketball team will travel to Central Michigan Wednesday in midweek #MACtion for a 6:30 pm ET tipoff in McGuirk Arena.
