January 11, 2025 | Track & Field
CHICAGO, Ill. -- Ball State track and field opened 2025 with an exceptional performance at the Wisconsin Midwest Invitational on Saturday in Chicago, Illinois.
First to begin was the long jump where three Cardinals advanced to the final rounds. Jenelle Rogers dominated the event, winning with a mark of 6.04 meters. Finishing third was freshman Kylee Marshall who jumped a mark of 5.68 meters. Sophie Daugard finished fifth with a mark of 5.56 meters.
All three Ball State competitors advanced to finals in the weight throw competition. The group was led by Malena Higgins who finished sixth overall with a throw of 15.02 meters. Brooklyn Taylor finished seventh, throwing a big personal best mark of 14.75 meters and Sydney Miller finished ninth with a mark of 12.88 meters.
Miller also competed really well in the shot put, hitting a new personal best mark of 12.84 meters and finishing sixth. Rogers finished fourth in the event with a throw of 14.73 meters.
The high jump was the final field event of the day. Ball State finished on a high note with a third-place finish for Malina Miller's jump of 1.70 meters.
On the track, Rogers won her second event of the day, crossing the finish line with a time of 8.69 meters in the 60-meter hurdles. Also in the finals were Jennah Rogers (8.74), Lauren Graham (9.09) and Sophie Daugard who finished with a personal best time of 9.13.
Two Cardinals made the 60-meter finals, including Marshall and Alana Springer. Springer finished fourth with a time of 7.61, followed by Marshall who finished eighth with a time of 7.85.
One of the biggest successes of the evening came in the 300-meter dash as Jenna Oriani broke her own program record that she previously set last year. Oriani shaved .2 seconds off her time to set a new Ball State 300-meter record of 39.2 and get the event win. Also running new personal bests were Springer (40.25), Allison Valladay (41.94) and Lindley Steele (43.61).
The distance team also collected a few personal bests on the day. In the 3,000-meter run, Jessica Velez and Kendyl Thrasher both crushed their previous bests by more than 10 seconds, finishing in 10:37.77 and 11:10.88 respectively.
Ball State track and field will now shift its focus to the Crossroads of America Classic. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 18 and will be held in Indianapolis.
