May 24, 2024 | Baseball, Soccer
CLEVELAND -- Ball State soccer player Avery Fenchel and baseball star Decker Scheffler are among 24 Mid-American Conference (MAC) student-athletes who will be honored with the Medal of Excellence Award during the 2024 Honors Dinner Ceremony at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower as part of MAC Spring Meetings on Thursday, May 30th.
Â
The Medal of Excellence is an award presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each of the 12 Conference member institutions. To be honored with the Medal of Excellence Award, student-athletes had to participate on the varsity level in a conference sponsored sport and shown evidence of academic success with a minimum 3.50 accumulative grade-point average, exhibited athletics excellence, leadership and service. Selection of the recipients was made by each MAC institution.
Â
Scheffler, leading Ball State this week in the MAC Baseball Championship in Avon, Ohio, boasts a 3.980 overall GPA while competing in his fourth season for a Ball State baseball program. Scheffler helped spark the Cardinals to a MAC tournament championship in 2023 and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. In fact, he led the MAC in batting average (.378) as a junior, adding 13 doubles, eight home runs and 49 RBI. This season, he has played in all 55 games while batting .335 and leading the Cardinals with 12 stolen bases. A staple among the top hitters in the Ball State batting order the past two seasons, he shares the team lead in 2024 with 75 hits and 55 runs, in addition to 10 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 43 RBI.
Â
Fenchel was a senior forward and a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection last fall while compiling a 3.978 overall GPA in her fourth season with the Cardinals. She helped Ball State to the MAC Tournament last season while earning All-MAC first-team honors for the second straight year. She finished the 2023 campaign with 11 goals. She was second in the MAC with three match-winning goals, among four overall. Fenchel's 11 goals matched her 11 from 2022 which are tied as the second-most ever in a Ball State single season. Her 24 career goals are fourth in Ball State history. In addition to a pair of All-MAC selections, she also is a three-time MAC All-Academic honoree.
