Ball State Performs Well at Home Meet

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State track and field hosted 22 teams at the We Fly Challenge Friday and Saturday at Briner Sports Complex. Â
Friday was a day full of field events as competition for the Cardinals opened with the discus throw. Sydney Miller, Brooklyn Taylor and Malena Higgins represented Ball State in the event. Miller finished in the top ten, recording a distance of 43.03 meters and Taylor recorded a personal best, hitting a mark of 37.22 meters. Â
After unfavorable weather conditions, the high jump picked up an hour and a half later. Malina Miller had a strong performance, winning the event with a mark of 1.65m. Â
On Saturday, the Cardinals started their morning in the 5,000m run. Jessica Velez had her outdoor season debut, finishing seventh with a time of 19:23.09. Running a new personal best, Kendyl Thrasher finished in a time of 19:44.00. Â
In the 3,000m steeplechase, Shelby Christman finished second with a time of 11:37.89. Ashley Craycraft had a strong performance in the event, running a new personal best time of 12:57.38. Â
Continuing on the track, the 4x100m relay team of Makayla Sumrall, Alana Springer, Lindley Steele and Jenna Oriani secured the win after crossing the finish line in 45.40. Â
The 800m run brought many personal successes for the Cardinals. Sarah Mahnensmith finished fourth after running a new personal best time of 2:16.55. In her outdoor debut, Evie Noel was not far behind, finishing with a time of 2:20.56. Ella Fullmer and Maci Hoskins also achieved new personal bests, finishing with times of 2:23.65 and 2:26.77, respectfully.Â
Jenelle Rogers had an impressive race in the 100m hurdles, finishing first with a time of 13.93. Jennah Rogers had a strong race as well, finishing third with a time of 14.26. In the same event, Lauren Graham ran a new personal best time of 14.37 and Kendra Keesling ran a college best time of 15.74. Â
In the 100m dash, Sumrall tied for first, crossing the finish line with a time of 11.57. Close behind, Springer finished third with a time of 11.70. Â
Steele made her 400m hurdle debut with an impressive fourth place finish. She crossed the finish line with a time of 1:05.92. Â
In the 200m dash, Jenelle Rogers had another big finish, coming in third with a time of 24.29. There were multiple Cardinals who recorded new personal bests in the event, including Paige Kirtz (25.22), Taylor Hickman (25.66), Mikayla Mimnaugh (28.82) and Maci Easton (29.22). Â
The 1,500m run was among the last of the Cardinals' races. Mahnensmith had a strong fourth place finish, running a time of 4:40.33. Finishing eighth, Fullmer ran a personal best time of 4:50.60. Â
Field events on Saturday were also very successful. In the javelin throw, all four Cardinal competitors set new records. Sophie Daugard finished fifth with a new personal best throw of 36.44m, Keesling finished eighth with a throw of 32.42m, and Taylor finished 15th with a throw of 28.66m. Maci Easton debuted in the event, hitting a mark of 22.32m. Â
Rogers continued her success, winning the shot put with a mark of 15.35m. Taylor had another personal best throw in the event, hitting a mark of 12.80m. Â
Next, the Cardinals will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Jesse Owens Classic. Competition will start Friday, April 19. Â
