Softball Completes Series Sweep of Bowling Green With 11-3 (6) Sunday Win
April 14, 2024 | Softball
For the first time in the series, it was the Falcons (5-25; 2-12 Mid-American Conference) which jumped out to an early start, capitalizing on a leadoff single and back-to-back walks to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals 20-21 (7-8 MAC) would not be deterred, however, as sophomore center fielder Ashlee Lovett opened the bottom half of the inning with a single to left, sparking an eight-run barrage by the home squad. Lovett would add a two-run double to cap the scoring in the frame, while finishing a solid overall weekend with a .700 (7-for-10) average, along with four RBI and four runs scored.
In all, Ball State sent 12 batters to the plate in the opening inning, marking the third straight game the team has batted around in the opening frame.
For the day, eight different Cardinals combined for a total of 13 hits, led by three from redshirt sophomore shortstop McKenna Mulholland. Graduate first baseman Samantha-Jo Mata led the BSU offense with three RBI in the game, while redshirt sophomore right fielder Hayley Urban picked up a pair of RBIs, including a second-inning RBI double to right center for her second hit of the season.
In the circle, sophomore Bridie Murphy recovered from her slow start to limit the Falcons to five hits and three runs on her way to her seventh win of the season. She also struck out a season-high seven batters over her 6.0 innings of work.
