Gallagher Leads Women’s Golf on Day 2 of Puerto Rico Classic

HUMACAO, Puerto Rico - - Sophomore Sarah Gallagher shot Ball State's lowest round of the week so far, tallying an even-par 72 to lead the women's golf team Wednesday morning on the second day of the Puerto Rico Classic.
The reigning MAC Golfer of the Week, Gallagher had a pretty steady day, carding 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey. The birdie, her fourth of the tournament, came on the 335-yard, par-4 sixth and helped her climb 18 spots into a tie for 21st, at +5 (149), among the field of 71 golfers on the Flamboyan Course at the Palmas Del Mar Golf Club in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
Ball State's leader in the clubhouse after Tuesday's opening round, sophomore Madelin Boyd maintained her status as the top individual in the field and is currently tied for 17th at +3 (147). She shot +2 (74) in her second round, including back-to-back birdies on holes 10 and 11 to raise her tournament total to three.
The second day also saw the Cardinals count rounds of +5 (77) from senior Kiah Parrott and +6 (78) from sophomore Jasmine Driscoll who are both tied for 39th overall at +10 (154) after the two rounds. Parrott's Wednesday score included three birdies, raising her tournament total to four.
As a team, the Cardinals shaved four strokes off its opening-day score and remains ninth among the 12-team tournament field with a 36-hole score of +32 (608). Florida Gulf Coast and Cal Baptist are currently tied for the Puerto Rico Classic lead at +6 (582), while UNCG's Ava Romfo is the event's individual leader at -5 (139).
Action in the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Ball State concludes Thursday with an 8 a.m. AT / 7 a.m. ET shotgun start.

"Sarah played a really solid round of golf today and Maddy Boyd continued her nice play as well," head coach Cameron Andry said. "Hopefully we can get a little better play from the bottom of our lineup tomorrow so we can finish with a strong round."
Freshman JJ Gregston also climbed several spots up the leaderboard with her second round +3 (75), moving into a tie for 26th at +7 (151). "The course was a little more challenging today with some difficult hole locations so I was encouraged that we found a way to improve on our score from yesterday," Andry said. "We still didn't take advantage of the par fives like we usually do but we're on the right track."
Back on the individual front, Ball State junior Payton Bennett carded a round of +4 (75) to climb 10 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 39th at +10 (154). Bennett, who is one of only six golfers to record an eagle in the tournament with her circle three on the 455-yard, par-5 11th Tuesday, also has four birdies in the event, including three today.Action in the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Ball State concludes Thursday with an 8 a.m. AT / 7 a.m. ET shotgun start.
