Boyd Leads Women’s Golf on Day 1 of Puerto Rico Classic

HUMACAO, Puerto Rico - - Sophomore Madelin Boyd shot a team-low round of +1 (73) Tuesday morning to lead the Ball State women's golf team on the opening day of the Puerto Rico Classic.
The effort, which was highlighted by a birdie on the par 4 17th, has Boyd tied for 12th overall among the field of 71 golfers on the Flamboyan Course at the Palmas Del Mar Golf Club in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
In fact, Boyd was the top finisher among the group of 11 individuals playing in the event, three strokes ahead of Little Rock's Viktoria Krnacova at +4 (76).
On the team front, freshman JJ Gregston and Jasmine Driscoll both tallied rounds of +4 (76) and are tied for 32nd overall. Gregston tied for fourth among the field with five birdies on the day, while Driscoll collected one.
In her first round of the spring, senior Kiah Parrott opened the 54-hole tournament with a round of +5 (77) and is currently tied for 39th overall with six other golfers, including reigning Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week Sarah Gallagher and individual Jenna Estravillo. Parrott and Estravillo finished their rounds with one birdie each, while Gallagher collected three.
With the team's top four golfers finishing the day at +18 (306), Ball State is currently tied for ninth among the 12-team field. Cal Baptist leads the tournament at -7 (281), followed by Little Rock +2 (290) and Western Carolina +4 (292). The Cardinals are just 14 strokes out of third.
Another Ball State individual highlight came from junior Payton Bennett who collected an eagle on the 455-yard, par 5 11th. It was one of just six eagles recorded in the opening round.
Action in the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Ball State continues Wednesday with another 8:30 a.m. AT / 7:30 a.m. ET shotgun start.
