March 29, 2024 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - Today's match was another nail biter for the Cardinals in which Eli Herran won in two sets on court No. 3 to clinch today's 4-3 victory over Toledo Friday afternoon at the Foster Adams Tennis Complex and Bill Richards courts.
The win gave Ball State an overall record of 10-7 while improving to 4-2 in the Mid-American Conference action while Toledo dropped to 8-10 for the year and 3-3 in league play.
The doubles point came down to the wire as both squads had each taken wins on courts two and one, respectively. Mason Tran paired up with Jacks Lancaster and were the first twosome off the court today, as the Cardinals No. 2 duo defeated the Rockets Poonthong Komolpisut and Hanamichi Carvajal, 6-3. The Rockets would then win on courts one and three to take an early 1-0 edge over the Cardinals as both teams headed into singles play.
Ball State began to make its comeback early by taking first sets on four of the six courts.
Smith breezed through his match posting a 6-3, 6-0 win against Toledo's No. 6 player, Matias Olivero to knot the score, 1-1.
After that, Ball State dropped straight set decisions on the top two courts to Toledo which gave the Rockets a 3-1 advantage over the Cardinals. Shortly after, the Cardinals took the Rockets down in a domino effect which saw Tran take down his opponent at the No. 4 slot in a three-set thriller to make the score, 3-2.
At position No. 5, Lancaster was in a heated battle after winning the first frame in a tiebreaker he made sure to stop Komolpisut from sending the match into overtime and would prevail in set two, 6-4 to tie the match 3-3.
Herran had won his first set over Toledo's No. 3 player Carvajal 6-4 and was in a marathon tiebreaker which saw Herran win it by a score of 7-6 (9-7) to claim the match win for the Cardinals. The victory marked Herran's 95th singles career win which ties him for seventh all-time with former Cardinal Todd Hershey.
Prior to today's match, the Cardinals recognized their three seniors, Herran, Vince Orlando and Parrish Simmons along with their graduate assistant Alec Robillard.
The Ball State men's tennis team will close out its home portion of its schedule on Sunday when it hosts Buffalo. First serve is at 11 am ET.
