Cardinals and Hot-Hitting Wynn Fall in MAC Doubleheader on Saturday
March 23, 2024 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State surrendered both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, 6-3 and 6-2, to close a Mid-American Conference series with Kent State.
Graduate student third baseman Haley Wynn batted 4-of-6 on the afternoon, producing two doubles, a triple and a stolen base during three at-bats in the second game, alone. But she was left on base after doubles in the first and third innings to reflect Ball State's Achilles' heel for the day – 14 runners left on base overall.
Kent State opened the day with four runs in the top of the first in Game 1, getting three of their 10 hits in the first inning. The Flashes limited the Cardinals to just three hits in the opener, with Ball State finally plating three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In Game 2, Ball State struck first when leadoff batter Jasmyne Armendariz singled and scored two batters later on Wynn's RBI double to right. Ashlee Lovett and Haley Urban both walked, to load the bases, but a pair of strikeouts ended the rally.
Despite its early lead, Ball State couldn't keep the Kent State bats in order. Starter Francys King allowed six runs over the next three innings as Kent State forced the Cardinals to play from behind for the third straight game.
Trailing 6-1 in the fifth, Wynn tripled to centerfield and scored two batters later on Lovett's double. But Lovett, trying to match Wynn's triple, ended the rally when she was thrown out trying to stretch the double.
The Cardinals (15-17, 2-4 MAC) return to the Softball Field at Merchants Bank Ballpark Complex on Tuesday when they host state rival Butler at 4 p.m.
