
Lancaster Takes Three-Set Thriller to Push Men’s Tennis Past WMU, 4-3

MUNCIE, Ind. - In a high intensity three-set thriller which saw Jacks Lancaster complete a come-from-behind victory over Western Michigan's Matej Kajzer to help push Ball State to a 4-3 victory over its biggest Mid-American Conference rival, Western Michigan Friday afternoon at the Northwest YMCA Tennis Center.
With the win, the Ball State men's tennis team improves to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in league play while Western Michigan falls to 12-4 for the year and 4-1 in MAC action.
The Cardinals started the match outdoors for the first time this season, but the unpredictable Indiana weather forced Ball State to go inside after doubles doubles had already started. BSU led on courts two and three prior to the match being stopped.
Once moved indoors, it was still tightly contested at those same positions. Western Michigan won on doubles court No. 1 while Ball State was victorious at the No. 3 slot. The point came down to the Cardinals' No. 2 doubles tandem of Mason Tran and Jacks Lancaster. It was knotted 6-6 versus WMU's Benjamin George and Drew Evans. Tran and Lancaster were able to clinch the doubles point after winning, 7-6 (8-6).
In singles, the Broncos knotted the match 1-1 after taking the top court from the Cardinals. Tran competed hard at the No. 4 singles position but fell despite leading the second set for a long time he ended up losing to Ashton Adsorb, 6-4, 6-3 which gave WMU a 2-1 edge over BSU.
After that, four courts remained. Vince Orlando tried for a possible comeback at two singles but lost despite his efforts pushing the Broncos lead to 3-1.
Herran battled at the No. 3 spot which was a back-and-forth affair and eventually went into a tiebreaker with a 6-6 score. Herran served up an ace to go up 6-5 in the tiebreaker and then Jackson Boone hit it outside the lines which earned Herran the 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) victory to make the score 3-2.
Smith then defeated Monterrey Quiros at the No. 6 slot, 6-2, 7-6 to tie the match back up 3-3. The final point would come down to Lancaster who had dropped his first frame to Kajzer on court No. 5 by a score of 6-4. Lancaster then completed his comeback taking set two 6-4 and then set three, 6-3 for the match point.
