MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team (5-4) dropped a hard fought 5-2 battle to Eastern Kentucky (13-3) Sunday afternoon at the Northwest YMCA. The score was a lot closer than what meets the eye nearly beating the Colonels in doubles play along with some high intensity singles matches. EKU has now won 11 straight dual matches.
The Cardinals dropped the doubles point after a close competition against the Colonels. Ball State took early leads on all three courts. Both losses on courts No. 1 and No. 2 were in a tiebreaker situation at 6-6. First to lose was the No. 1 doubles tandem of Vince Orlando and Nathaniel Webster who fell to EKU's Fernando Bulnes Garrorena and Evzen Holis, 7-6 (7-3). The doubles win then came down to courts two and three. Mason Tran and Jacks Lancaster were up at No. 2 slot but fell 7-6 (7-5) to Moritz Mayer and Mario Martin which gave the Colonels the early 1-0 edge over the Cardinals.
Ball State began its comeback as the Cardinals went up 2-1 after taking victories on courts four and two, respectively. Eli Herran played at the No. 4 spot against Moritz Mayer winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Shortly after, Orlando was a winner on court No. 2 with his 7-5, 6-1 defeat versus Martin.
On court one, Webster's comeback fell short falling to Holis, 6-2, 6-4 and EKU would knot the match at 2-2. EKU took court No. 3 to go back up 3-2 over BSU.
The match would come down to courts five and six which were both close competitions but unfortunately, the Colonels would take both from the Cardinals to seal their victory.
The Ball State men's tennis team heads to LaJolla, California for its annual spring break trip to compete at the Doubles Championship (Feb. 29-March 3). The Cardinals will also play Pacific University (Feb. 29) and Villanova (March 3) in dual play.
