Baseball Rides Dominant Pitching Performance and Balanced Offensive Attack to Win over Illinois

CONWAY, S.C. – The Ball State baseball team rode a scoreless pitching performance from Logan Schulfer and a balanced offensive attack to a 7-1 win over Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium.
The Cardinals (4-3) put up four runs in the first three innings on the Illini (2-5) to cruise to the win in their final game of the weekend showcase hosted by Coastal Carolina.
Dylan Grego got things going with an RBI double that brought in Michael Hallquist in the second inning. Hunter Dobbins and Matthew Gonzalez sparked a third inning rally with an RBI single and two-run double, respectively to put Ball State ahead 4-0.
Ball State extended the advantage with solo home runs by Nick Gregory in the fourth inning and Hallquist in the sixth to lead 6-0. Illinois got on the board in the seventh but the Cardinals responded with an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Grant Miller for the final tally of the contest.
Hallquist went 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored, while Grego also had a pair of knocks.
Schulfer (1-1) allowed only one hit and struck out three in 5.1 scoreless to earn his first win of the year. Sam Klein tossed 3.2 innings of one-run balls with four strikeouts to pick up the save. Illinois starter Regan Hall (1-1) allowed three runs in 2.0 innings pitched to be saddled with the loss.
