February 25, 2024 | Softball
ATLANTA - - Despite slowing down one of the nation's top offenses, the Ball State softball team closed play in the I-75 Tournament by dropping both ends of Sunday's doubleheader at Georgia Tech by scores of 6-4.
Â
The Cardinals (6-9) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opener thanks to a two-run home run from redshirt junior catcher / first baseman McKayla Timmons in the first inning and a solo home run from graduate first baseman Samantha-Jo Mata in the second.
Â
Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets (10-7) countered with the next six runs and went on to claim the 6-4 win after a seventh inning RBI single from Ball State graduate third baseman Haley Wynn.
Â
In the nightcap, redshirt sophomore designated player Jessica Hoffman once again gave the Cardinals an early lead with an RBI single in the top of the first. However, Georgia Tech scored the next six runs to pull ahead 6-1 heading into the seventh.
Â
Ball State would continue to fight, taking advantage of a pair of hit batters courtesy of a two-run triple from Wynn to cut the lead to 6-3. The Cardinals would get one more run on an RBI groundout from graduate second baseman / catcher Jazmyne Armendariz but could not complete the comeback in a second 6-4 setback.
Â
Despite the losses, the Cardinals were able to limit the Georgia Tech offense to just 18 hits, 12 runs and two home runs over the two games. The Yellow Jackets entered the day batting .371 and averaging 14.9 hits, 7.27 runs and 2.13 home runs per game. Â
