CHARLESTON, S.C. – Decker Scheffler had three hits and drove in a pair of seventh-inning insurance runs in the to boost Ball State to a 4-1 victory over Michigan State at the Swig & Swine College Baseball Classic, Sunday morning, at Shipyard Park.
Scheffler, who led the Mid-American Conference in batting last season, began the season slow this weekend by collecting just one hit in his first 11 at-bats. But crisp temperatures in the early morning start – 9:15 a.m. – saw him rise as the game's top producer. After a fly to leftfield in the first inning, he punched three consecutive singles, including the bases-loaded hit that scored Nick Gregory and Grant Miller for Ball State's 4-1 advantage.
In a game once again dominated by pitching, the Cardinals managed just two extra-base hits on doubles by Hunter Dobbins and Nick Husovsky. Dobbins batted 1-of-4 on Sunday to continue a torrid pace, batting .357 in the opening weekend with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and a season-opening four-game hit streak.
On the mound Sunday, Ball State starter Merritt Beeker (1-0) collected his first victory since transferring from East Carolina. He completed five innings, allowing just one run and four hits among 10 strikeouts. Lucas Letsinger shut down the Spartans over three shutout innings, and Brady Owens pitched the first two outs in the ninth before giving way to Tanner Knapp.
Knapp, who struck out all four batters he faced in a Friday save against Lehigh, allowed a walk and a wild pitch before inducing a ground out to Michael Hallquist at third, to collect his second save of the weekend.
Ball State pitchers whiffed 15 Spartans, just hours after striking out 17 against Merrimack on Saturday evening.
The Cardinals opened the scoring by taking advantage of the first of three Michigan State errors. After Dobbins' double in the fourth, Blake Bevis singled him to third and Dobbins scored on an errant pickoff attempt. Bevis scored on a single by Hallquist, and, after the Spartans manufactured a single run in the fifth, Scheffler elevated the Ball State lead with his single in the seventh.
Ball State (3-1) won three of four games in Charleston to begin the season. The Cardinals continue their South Carolina road schedule with round-robin games next Friday against Cincinnati (11 a.m.) and Illinois (7 p.m.) in Conway, S.C., followed by a Saturday bout against host Coastal Carolina (4 p.m.).
