Solid Second Round Propels Women’s Golf Into Third on Opening Day of BGSU Women’s Intercollegiate
February 13, 2024 | Women's Golf
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - - The Ball State women's golf team turned in the lowest second round of the BGSU Women's Intercollegiate Tuesday evening, climbing into third place among the 14-team field on the Blue Course at the Wigwam Resort and Country Club.
The Cardinals started its first tournament of the spring slate strong, firing a 309 (+25) to place sixth after the opening 18 holes. The second time through the course was even better, however, as BSU's golfers carded a combined 296 (+12) which was one stroke better than any other squad.
"I am proud of the way we battled after getting off to a shaky start," head coach Cameron Andry said. "The greens are elevated and grew firmer as the day went on, so we had to make adjustments on the fly, but we showed some growth and maturity in how we remained focused and patient and adjusted to take what the golf course gave us. I'm excited to see us compete in the top pairing tomorrow!"
BSU's second-round 296 was also the second lowest of the tournament so far, trailing only tournament leader Grand Canyon's 294 (+10) in the opening round. The 'Lopes currently hold a six-shot lead over second place Idaho and are 12 ahead of the third-place Cardinals.
Junior Sabrina Langerak led the charge for Ball State, shooting a 145 (+3) over her 36-hole day which is currently tied for second and just one stroke off the lead. Her opening-round 74 (+3) including a pair of birdies, while her second-round 71 (E) included six. Overall, her eight total birdies were tied as the most among the field of 78 golfers on Tuesday.
"Sabrina was incredibly solid all day," Andry exclaimed. "She managed her game well and hit some great shots, but I was even more impressed with how she maintained her composure when she hit some poor shots."
Sophomores Jasmine Driscoll and Sarah Gallagher carded six and five birdies, respectively, over their opening two rounds, helping the team as a whole tie for first among the field with 26 total birdies. That effort helped the Cardinals rank second among the field on both par 4s (4.33, +23) and par 5s (4.94, -3).
Driscoll, Ball State's leader in stroke average at 74.13 entering the tournament, is currently tied for 14th overall at 151 (+10) with scores of 76 (+5) in her first round and 75 (+4) in her second. Gallagher is currently tied for 35th following her second-round 77 (+6).
Freshman JJ Gregston and sophomore Madelin Boyd each shot a 75 (+4) in their second rounds, with Gregston currently tied for 21st at 154 (+12) and Boyd tied for 25th at 155 (+13). They also combined for seven birdies, with four from Boyd and three from Gregston.
Playing as an individual, freshman Madelyn Young also carded a pair of birdies over her two rounds and played the courses five par 5s at a combined +1.
The Cardinals will be in the lead group Wednesday morning with the third and final round gets underway at 10:45 a.m. ET / 8:45 a.m. MST.
