Women's Golf Opens Spring Campaign at BGSU Women's Intercollegiate
February 11, 2024 | Women's Golf
MUNCIE, Ind. - - "Round Two" of the 2023-24 season begins Tuesday for the Ball State women's golf team when it opens play at the BGSU Women's Intercollegiate at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, Arizona.
Â
The Cardinals are looking to build on a strong "opening round" from the fall which ended with a record-shattering performance at the Diamante Intercollegiate (Oct. 22-24) at the Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.
Â
Ball State finished the event with the lowest single round score in program history at 285, which helped establish a new program record 54-hole score of 865. The effort marked the second time this season the Cardinals set the program's 54-hole mark, with the first being an 875 on its way to the Brittany Kelly Classic (Sept. 18-19) title.
Â
But while the fall portion of the season ended there, the work did not stop.
Â
"Every player on our roster has really worked hard over the last few months so I'm excited to see them compete and reap the payout from the investments they've made in their games," head coach Cameron Andry said. "I want to see us build on the momentum we gained during a strong fall campaign and continue to make daily improvements as we work toward the MAC Championship in late April."
Â
Along with the hard work at the course and at the state-of-the-art Earl Yestingsmeier Golf Center over the last few months, the Cardinals worked hard to develop all areas of their game.
Â
"Our program is built on whole-person development, so our goal is to develop our student-athletes as people both on and off the golf course," Andry said. "Our strength coach, Maddy Labrador, has pushed every player in the weight room and we've seen some major gains with strength and speed. We have also been intentional about reflecting on tournament experiences from the fall and we even participated in a team book study which focused on the process of mastering your craft. I think our players have not only developed physically and with their golf skills, but also mentally and emotionally."
Â
The Cardinals will put that work to an early test this weekend, battling a talented field which includes some of the teams it will be battling in late April at the Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City Ohio for the MAC Championships.
Â
Joining Ball State and the host Falcons at the BGSU Women's Intercollegiate will be fellow MAC programs Akron, Northern Illinois and Toledo. In addition, Abilene Christian, Butler, Creighton, CSU Bakersfield, Dayton, Grand Canyon, Idaho, Montana and Western Illinois complete the field.
Â
"This event provides us an opportunity to compete with some of the other teams that I believe will compete for the top few spots at the MAC Championship," Andry said. "We haven't seen Northern Illinois or Toledo yet this season and the only time we faced Bowling Green, they whooped us, so this will be a good opportunity to find out where we stack up among the top tier of teams in the league."
Â
Competing in the lineup for the Cardinals this week will be Jasmine Driscoll, Sarah Gallagher, JJ Gregston, Madelin Boyd and Sabrina Langerak. Driscoll leads the group with a 74.13 stroke average this season and has fired a team-best six rounds at-or-below par. In addition, Madelyn Young will be competing as an individual for BSU.
Â
The six Ball State golfers will take on the 6,058-yard, 71-par Wigwam Golf Course starting on holes 12-15 in the opening round Tuesday. A shotgun start is set for 10 a.m. ET / 8 a.m. MST, with the second round immediately after. BSU's first look at the course, however, will come in the form of a Monday practice round.
Â
"This course is new to all of us, so the practice round will be extremely important as we finalize a game plan for attacking it," Andry concluded. "The course features six par 3's, so there will be a premium on mid-iron play. Additionally, with this being our first event coming out of the winter, it will be vital that we work on our touch on and around the greens so we can be effective with our short game."
