
Women’s Tennis Defeats Oakland; Kirtaine Earns First Win as Cardinals’ Head Coach

MUNCIE, Ind. -The Ball State women's tennis team earned a 5-2 sweep over Oakland Sunday afternoon at the Northwest YMCA to give first-year head coach Sachin Kirtaine his first victory at the helm of the Cardinals.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-3 overall while Oakland drops to 1-2 on the season.
The Cardinals took the early 1-0 lead over Oakland after capturing the doubles point. The No. 3 doubles tandem of Isabelle Tanjuatco and Sarah Shahbaz cruised to a 6-0 take down over Alma and Aya Orenstain. After that, the top court was in a tiebreak where Annika Planinsek and Sydney Hrehor tallied a 7-6 (7-3) win to clinch the first point of the match. Although, play was suspended on court No. 2 the score was knotted at 6-6.
Ella Hazelbaker pushed the Cardinals lead to 2-0 after beating Oakland's No. 6 player Aya Orenstain 6-1 in straight sets. Shortly after and almost simultaneously, Tanjuatco and Elena Malykh took down their respective opponents on courts five and two, respectively to seal match point for the Cardinals. Hrehor increased Ball State's scored to 5-0 with her 7-5, 6-2 defeat over Hultqvist at the No. 4 position.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues spring action at home Friday, Feb. 16 when it hosts Youngstown State at the Northwest YMCA. First serve is at 5 pm ET.
