Men’s Volleyball Out Toughs Lindenwood in Five-Set Thriller

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - After a long two-match road trip, the Ball State men's volleyball team prevailed in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) action to take a 3-2 come-from-behind victory at Lindenwood Saturday night at Robert F. Hyland Arena.
The No. 11 Cardinals (8-8, 2-1 MIVA) rallied back to an impressive 21-19 fifth set victory to take tonight's match from the Lions (3-7, 0-3 MIVA).
For the match, Patrick Rogers set the pace for Ball State with a season best 20 kills while Tinaishe Ndavazocheva finished the night with 19. Lucas Machado dished out 50 assists and Dyer Ball tallied a career best 14 digs and seven block assists. Also setting a personal high tonight was Wil McPhillips with eight block assists.
Lindenwood came out strong in the opening set while Ball State struggled to find any kind of rhythm. The slow start caused the Cardinals to drop the first frame to the Lions by a score of 25-22.
The Cardinals fought their way back with its best offensive showing of the match in the second set with a .405 hitting percentage to take the frame from the Lions, 28-26.
Ball State carried that same momentum into the third period whiich saw Machado and Ndavazocheva make some smart plays at the net to push the Cardinals to a late 20-16 lead over the Lions. Lindenwood stayed within reach, but Ball State remained one step ahead and would take the third frame 25-23 off a kill from Rogers.
Lindenwood wasn't going to go away easy, and the Lions sent the match into OT with their 25-18 fourth set take down over Ball State.
The fifth set was all about patience and the Cardinals continued to fight despite a back-and-forth affair that went on which seemed like forever. BSU broke the 19-19 tie with a defensive block assist from McPhillips and Machado. Ball then served up match point to seal the win for the Cardinals.
