Softball Collects Season-High 10 Hits in Nightcap Loss to UNF
February 10, 2024 | Softball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - - The Ball State softball team pounded out a season-high 10 hits in Saturday's nightcap but could not complete a late-game rally in a 10-5 setback at North Florida to close its second day at the River City Leadoff.
Â
After dropping the day's opener to James Madison by a score of 8-1 at the UNF Softball Complex, the Cardinals (0-4) were able to set the tone early in the nightcap with a two-run home run from redshirt junior catcher McKayla Timmons in the first and a solo shot from graduate third baseman Haley Wynn in the second.
Â
Unfortunately, the Ospreys (3-0) would score the 10 runs over their next three at bats to take control. Ball State would try to battle back, scoring a pair of runs in the sixth and putting two runners on in the seventh, but ultimately fell short.
Â
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wynn recorded Ball State's first home run of the season, driving in the team's only run in the day's opening game. She would go on to add another solo shot in the second inning of the nightcap, raising her career home run total to 21.
- Timmons gave BSU its first lead of the season in the nightcap, following a walk to graduate designated player Jazmyne Armendariz with a two-run blast to left field in the top of the first.
- Eight different Cardinals recorded at least one hit against UNF, including the first career hit for freshman Maia Pietrzak.
- Senior Alyssa Stramaglia had the most success for the Cardinals in the circle, throwing the final 2.2 innings versus North Florida. She allowed just two hits and one unearned run. She also registered four strikeouts and finished the day with six after recording two over 3.0 innings versus the Dukes (3-0).
