
Cardinals Open the Indoor Track and Field Season with Strong Performances at the Tom Wright Open

BOWLING GREEN, Oh. -- The Ball State track and field team opened its indoor season at the Tom Wright Open in Bowling Green on Saturday. Â
It was a strong opening appearance for the Cardinals with a multitude of personal bests and promising performances from the true freshmen. Â
The day started with the weight throw where all three of Ball State's competitors landed in the finals. Malena Higgins finished fifth overall with a mark of 14.96 meters. In sixth was Brooklyn Taylor (13.92m), followed by Sydney Miller in ninth (13.49m), each throwing personal best marks. Miller also threw a personal best in the shot put, hitting a mark of 13.49 meters. Â
Leading the jumpers, freshman Kylee Marshall won her first long jump event with a mark of 5.79 meters. Also jumping well were Sophie Daugard, landing in the third-place spot (5.59m), and Mckenna Cinotte who finished fourth (4.43m). Â
Malina Miller performed well in the high jump, matching her personal best height of 1.74 meters and finishing second. Â
On the track Emma Potter opened her season with a personal best finish in the 300-meter run. She crossed the finish line second with a time of 39.82. Close behind, in third, was Jenna Oriani who crossed the line with a time of 39.84. Â
Three Cardinals moved on to the 60-meter hurdles finals, including Jennah Rogers (8.63), Lauren Graham (9.11) and Sophie Daugard (9.23). Rogers's race resulted in a new personal best time and a second-place finish. Â
The 60-meter dash was another strong event for Ball State with five of the seven Cardinals qualifying for finals. Alana Springer led the group, finishing second overall with a time of 7.66. Next in was Moriah Johnson finishing third (7.68), Marshall finishing fifth (7.80), Oriani finishing sixth (7.80) and Jiah Davenport finishing seventh (7.90). Â
The meet concluded with the 4x400-meter relay. Among the two Ball State teams that competed in the event, the squad made up of Emma Potter, Allison Valladay, Paige Kirtz and Moriah Johnson secured the second-place spot with a time of 4:01.20. Â Â
Following Christmas break, the Cardinals will prepare for the Wisconsin Midwest Invitational (Jan. 11), hosted by the University of Wisconsin at the Gately Track and Field Center in Chicago, Illinois. Â
