Cardinals' Rally Falls Short in Bid to Snap Longest MAC Winning Streak

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ball State men's basketball team went on an early second half run to pull ahead after trailing at the break, but Toledo closed out a 77-72 win on Saturday night at Savage Arena.
The Cardinals (8-8, 0-4 MAC) came out of halftime strong facing a 40-33 deficit, as junior guard Jalin Anderson scored 10 points in a 12-3 Ball State scoring run to begin the period and put the visitors ahead 45-43. The advantage would peak at six points on three occasions, including when the Cardinals led 57-51 at the 11:00 minute mark, but the Rockets (10-6, 4-0 MAC) clamped down on defense with a 13-2 run over the next six minutes to regain a 64-59 edge.
Ball State had an opportunity down 73-70 following a Basheer Jihad 3-pointer at the 1:06 mark, but after an out of bounds review, the hosts got the ball and made two free throws to secure the decision.
Anderson went for a game-best 25 points while adding six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Davion Bailey and Jihad scored 13 points each as the other Cardinals in double figures scoring. Mickey
Pearson Jr. (eight points, seven rebounds, two assists) and Ben Hendriks (eight points, two rebounds) added to the Ball State offense.
Toledo increased its record winning streak to 19 in Mid-American Conference games with the win. The Rockets' most recent home conference loss was to Ball State on Jan. 3, 2023 (90-83). Toledo got 24 points from Ra'Heim Moss and 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists from Dante Maddox Jr. to stave off the Cardinals.
The visitors shot 50.9 percent (27-53) from the field, including 32.0 percent (8-25) from distance and 90.0 percent (10-11) on free throws. Toledo tallied a 44.3 (27-61) shooting percentage and 38.9 percent (7-18) on 3-pointers. The Rockets won the rebounding (33-29) and turnover (10-5) battles.
The Cardinals stay on the road to take on Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
