Women's Golf Leads After Day 1 Of Brittany Kelly Classic
September 18, 2023 | Women's Golf
YORKTOWN, Ind. - - Freshman JJ Gregston fired an opening-round 70 (-2) and senior Kiah Parrott followed with a second-round 69 (-3) to help the Ball State women's golf team jump out to a 15-stroke lead after the opening 36 holes of the Brittany Kelly Classic Monday afternoon at The Players Club at Woodland Trails.
"I'm really proud of the effort today, everyone battled," head coach Cameron Andry said. "The way JJ played in the first round, especially after getting off to a rough start, was fantastic. She kept us in it when we weren't playing our best. In the second round, Kiah did what a senior is supposed to do and played solid golf. We also got a strong effort out of Sabrina."
The Cardinals finished the opening round with a team score of 295 (+7) and went six strokes lower in the second at 289 (+1) to take a commanding lead at 584 (+8). UIC is currently second among the 13-team field at 599 (+23).
Overall, Parrott is tied for the tournament lead at 143 (-1), after scoring a 74 (+2) over the opening 18 holes to go along with her second-round score of 69 (-3), which ties as the lowest round in the tournament and as the sixth lowest round in program history. Parrott's 143 also ties as the ninth-lowest 36-hole total in program history.
Gregston is not far behind, tied for sixth overall at 146 (+2) following her 70 (-2), which was the lowest opening round score of the day, with a 76 (+4).
Also tied for sixth is junior Sabrina Langerak who went 76 (+4) and 70 (-2) over her two rounds. Looking at the squad as a whole, all nine Ball State golfers are currently in the top 45 of the 81-golfer field.
"It's a different experience, sleeping on a lead," Andry continued. "Something we haven't done before with this team. We'll see how they handle it. It's a good problem to have and we'll get back after it tomorrow and see if we can't win this thing."
The final round is set for a 9 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday back at The Players Club at Woodland Trails in Yorktown.
