September 15, 2023 | Field Hockey
ATHENS, Ohio - In ther Ball State field hockey teams Mid-American Conference opener, sophomore Fleur Knopert scored the game-winning goal in overtime to push the Cardinals past Ohio University by a score of 2-1 Friday afternoon at Pruitt Field.
With the win, Ball State improved to 2-4 overall and has now started MAC action 1-0 for the second-straight season under Ball State field hockey head coach Caitlin Walsh. With the loss, Ohio dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
"Proud of the team for playing hard and finding a way," Walsh said. "It was a gritty game, but very exciting and truly a full team win."
This is the second consecutive season the Cardinals have defeated the Bobcats in overtime. The best word to describe today's contest is Déjà vu. Last year in Muncie, Knopert also scored the game-winner in the extra period versus Ohio.
Knopert netted the game-winning goal at the 67:33 mark in overtime after teammate Christine Ditizio aggressively attacked the circle coming in on the right-hand side where she found Knopert for the score. The goal marked Knopert's fourth goal of the season and the 13th for her career.
The Cardinals took the early 1-0 edge over the Bobcats early in the opening frame, as Michaela Graney found the back of the cage off the assist from Libby Kraus and Knopert with just 3:41 shaved off the clock. The goal was Graney's first of the season.
Ball State's defense held Ohio scoreless until the game was evened towards the end of the final period. Both teams then played neck-and-neck the remainder of regulation to send the contest into overtime.
This was the third overtime game for Ball State this season and second in just six days. The Cardinals have won two of the three overtime contests this season.
The win was awarded to the Cardinals goalkeeper, Hannah Johnston who faced nine corners today while also registering nine saves.
The Ball State field hockey team will return to the Briner Sports Complex for its home opener Sunday against Saint Louis at 1 pm ET.
