Field Hockey Falls to Bucknell Late in OT, 2-1
September 01, 2023 | Field Hockey
COLUMBUS, Ohio - It was a dog fight today between the Cardinals and the Bison as both teams put up a defensive battle where the result came as time was winding down in overtime. The Ball State field hockey team dropped a 2-1 OT heartbreaker to Bucknell in the extra period Friday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field..Â
Â
The Cardinals would strike first at the 3:41 mark against the Bison's. Fleur Knopert dribbled the ball right into the scoring circle to draw out Bucknell's goalie which allowed Knopert to find Paloma Gomez Rengifo for the score. The goal marked Rengifo's second of the season while also giving Ball State the 1-0 edge over Bucknell in the opening minutes of play.Â
Â
After that, the Cardinals defense played a big role in keeping Bucknell scoreless throughout the remainder of the first half of play. Despite the Bison's efforts, Ball State shutout Bucknell to keep a 1-0 advantage at intermission.
Â
Bucknell finally knotted the contest 1-1 around the seven-minute mark of the third period. The Cardinals drew a few penalty corners but were unable to capitalize on those scoring opportunities. Both squads would head into the final period of play with the score still tied.
Â
The defensive battle continued in the final 15 minutes of action as both teams only had two shots apiece. Bucknell had the opportunity to score on a penalty corner in the fourth, but Ball State held the Bison's off, eventually sending the contest into overtime.Â
Â
Both teams went back-and-forth in the extra period throughout the duration of OT. The Cardinals struggled to get a shot off while the Bison had four shot attempts.Â
Â
Unfortunately for Ball State, Bucknell would connect on a corner at the top of the circle for the game-winner.Â
