Softball Places Five on CSC Academic All-District Squad

INDIANAPOLIS - - For their work both on the field and in the classroom, five members of the Ball State softball team were named to the 2023 Academic All-District® Softball Team as selected by College Sports Communicators.

Representing the Cardinals on the list were senior infielder Haley Wynn, junior outfielders Kaitlyn Mathews and Remington Ross, along with sophomore pitchers Emma Eubank and Angelina Russo.

Wynn, an exercise science major with a 3.90 grade point average, finished the 2023 season ranked third in the Mid-American Conference with a .377 batting average. A 2023 First Team All-MAC selection, she started all 53 games for the Cardinals this season. Wynn was also one of the league's top run producers with 45 runs scored and 38 RBI on the year.

Mathews, a general studies major with a 3.63 GPA, started all 50 games she played for Ball State this season. A staple in left field, she boasted .271 average with 10 doubles, a triple, and a pair of home runs. Mathews also collected 19 RBI and scored 21 runs on the year.

Ross, a general studies major with a 3.72 GPA, was one of the nation's top threats on the base paths, finishing the season a perfect 23-for-23 in stolen base attempts. A starter in 48 of the 49 games she played, Ross also produced a .254 average with four doubles and a triple.

Eubank, a biology major with a 3.77 GPA, appeared in 13 games in the circle for the Cardinals this season, producing a 4.16 ERA and a .320 average against. She picked up two wins and a save, while striking out 17 batters over 35.1 innings of work.

Russo, a premedical preparation major with a 3.86 GPA, appeared in 35 games and made 18 pitching starts for the Cardinals. She led the team with a 2.87 ERA and a .218 average against, while throwing one complete game no-hitter and combining for another. For her effort this season, Russo was named Second Team All-MAC.

To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve, achieve sophomore standing at their current school, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50 and be nominated by her sports information director.

All five Ball State student-athletes will be eligible for voting for CSC Academic All-America® honors which will be announced on June 6.
