April 29, 2023 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - Junior Mariya Polishchuk's straight-set singles win on court one clinched a 4-0 victory for the second-seeded Ball State women's tennis team over third-seeded Buffalo Saturday afternoon in the semifinal match of the 2023 Mid-American Conference Tournament at the Northwest YMCA.
It was a highly competitive doubles point which was to be expected. The Cardinals fell behind early after losing on court No. 1 to the Bulls.
The point would come down to courts two and three. Polishcuk paired up with Allison Mulville at the No. 2 slot. The duo fell behind early to the Bulls Lolina Sedas Schietekat and Gabriella Akopyan but came back to take the match 6-3.
Ball State's No. 3 doubles tandem of Jessica Braun and Emily Desai would then give BSU the early 1-0 edge over UB after defeating Ambre Amat and Deanne Choo, 6-4.
The Cardinals would then take first sets on five of the six courts in singles play. After some inclement weather occurred the match was moved indoors to the Northwest YMCA.
Amy Kaplan dominated Basak Akbas in straight sets on court No. 3 to put Ball State up 2-0.
After that, it was a domino effect as Elena Malkh wrapped her match up on court six taking both frames by a 6-1 decision.
Polishchuk then claimed match point at slot No. 1 (6-4, 6-4) to send the Cardinals to the MAC Tournament title match for the second-straight season against top-seeded Toledo.
Second-seeded Ball State will face top-seeded Toledo at 12 pm ET Sunday if played outdoors at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center or 2 pm ET indoors at the Northwest YMCA.
