Ball State Falls in Series Opener at Akron

AKRON, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team returned to action for a Mid-American Conference matchup at Akron. Decker Scheffler led the Cardinals with two hits, but BSU fell 4-0.
With the loss, Ball State fell to 18-7 overall and 8-2 in MAC play, while Akron improved to 12-13 overall and 5-5 in league games.
Akron got on the board first in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from DJ Butler. The Zips added three runs in the bottom of the seventh on two hits and one Cardinal error. Akron took a 4-0 lead into the top of the eighth. The Zips went on to win the game by the same score.
Scheffler led BSU with a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Adam Tellier and Zach Lane each added a hit for the Cardinals. Lane broke up the no-hit bid in the top of the sixth.
Trennor O'Donnell started the game on the mound for the Cardinals and went five innings. He struck out six batters and surrendered one earned run. He got the loss and fell to 2-1 on the year. Ryan Brown added 1 2/3 innings in relief. He struck out four batters. He gave up three runs, two earned. Brady Owens went 1 1/3 innings in relief and had three strikeouts.
Sammy Tortorella threw a complete-game shutout with 10 strikeouts. He improved to 3-1 on the season.
The Cardinals and Zips return to action on Saturday for game two of the three-game series. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
