Season High 15 Runs Leads Softball Past Kent State In Friday's Nightcap
March 17, 2023 | Softball
BEREA, Ohio - - The Ball State softball team rebounded from a 4-3 walk-off loss in Friday's opener to salvage a Mid-American Conference doubleheader split with Kent State by scoring a 15-9 victory in the nightcap at the BW Softball Field.
The first game saw the Cardinals (11-12; 1-1 MAC) fall behind early as the Golden Flashes (6-15; 1-1 MAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. While BSU was able to battle back and eventually even the score, a walk-off double allowed KSU to secure the opening-game victory.
In the nightcap, a two-run home run from redshirt senior second baseman/catcher Jazmyne Armendariz and a pair of home runs from senior third baseman Haley Wynn helped turn the tide. BSU would pull ahead 3-0 in the top of the first, only to see the Golden Flashes tie the score in the bottom of the frame.
The Cardinals added three more runs in the second inning, capped by Armendariz's first home run of the season. Kent State attempted to answer in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs, but were limited to just two runs thanks to a pivotal inning-ending double play.
Wynn's three-run blast in the top of the fifth extended Ball State's lead to 10-5, while her solo shot in the seventh made the score 12-9 and helped the Cardinals pull away with the six-run victory.
